Common questions

Foot & ankle injury FAQs

Do I need surgery for a broken ankle?

Not always. Many stable ankle fractures heal well in a boot or cast. Displaced or unstable fractures may need surgery to realign and fix the bone. A specialist assessment with X-rays, and sometimes a CT scan, helps decide the right option for you.

How is an Achilles tendon rupture treated?

Achilles ruptures can be treated non-operatively in a functional boot, or with surgical repair. The best option depends on the injury, your activity level and your general health, and is discussed in detail at consultation.

What is a Lisfranc injury?

A Lisfranc injury affects the joints and ligaments in the middle of the foot. These injuries are easily missed on early X-rays, so persistent midfoot pain, swelling or bruising on the sole after an injury should be assessed by a foot and ankle specialist.

Can I see a private foot and ankle surgeon in London without a GP referral?

Self-pay patients can usually contact the practice directly. Most insurers need a GP referral and pre-authorisation, so please check with your insurer before booking.

Which London hospitals do you operate at?

Private consultations and surgery take place at St John & St Elizabeth Hospital, King Edward VII’s Hospital, the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital and Thames View at Charing Cross Hospital (Imperial Private Healthcare).
